Thanks to the advent of electronic medical records, future advances in medical knowledge will come from the sharing of clinical information. This secondary reuse of data brings both opportunities and challenges. One of the opportunities is in new approaches to comparative effectiveness research (CER), and a major challenge (as always) is providing adequate privacy protection. I will describe a kind of CER study and discuss different data sharing models and the different options for protecting privacy. What is needed is to develop standard data sharing protocols and privacy practices, which occupies a space between "best practices" and "engineering standards." Anand Sarwate is a Research Assistant Professor at the Toyota Technological Institute at Chicago, a philanthropically endowed academic computer science institute located on the University of Chicago campus. From Fall 2008 to Fall 2011 he was a postdoctoral researcher at theInformation Theory and Applications Center (ITA) at UC San Diego, which is part of the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (CALIT2). He received a PhD in Electrical Engineering from UC Berkeley in 2008. Prof. Sarwate's is broadly interested in statistical algorithms applied to problems in distributed systems, communications, and privacy and security.
