2012 Summer Internship Program

2012 Summer Internship Program

iDASH is pleased to announce the availability of summer research internships for undergraduates, graduate students, and postgraduates.

Program Structure

Each intern is paired with one primary mentor and, in some cases, secondary mentors. Interns may work independently or on small teams for their projects. Interns are generally expected to reside in San Diego during the internship, and are required to attend a kickoff meeting at the beginning of the program* and a capstone meeting at the end of the program to present the results of their work. During the internship period, iDASH will host weekly lunch seminars to be attended by all interns and the program leaders. Interns are also expected to schedule regular 1:1 meetings with their mentor(s) throughout the internship period. Monthly social activities will also be hosted for interns – in 2011, this included potluck lunches, day hikes, and a surfing session.

Previous internships

In the spring of 2011, UCSD’s iDASH program received nearly sixty applications from across the country in response to the announcement of our first summer internship program. Sixteen applicants were selected by a faculty committee, including undergraduate and graduate students from Duke, U of Utah, U of Oklahoma, UNC Chapel Hill, U of Minnesota, San Diego State University, and several UC campuses. Starting in late May, interns worked individually and in teams with a dozen mentors from iDASH and affiliated campus departments on projects covering a wide range of topics relevant to the iDASH program, including data integration, image processing and privacy, natural language processing (NLP) tools, data sharing, and more. Following ten weeks of project work over the summer, iDASH hosted our first Internship Symposium, where students presented their projects to an audience of their peers and other guests from UCSD and beyond via a live webcast.
