Abstract

The workshop will assemble specialists in privacy technology to discuss issues that apply to biomedical data sharing, as well as main stakeholders who will provide an overview of the main uses for the data, different laws and regulations, and their own views on privacy. 

Participants will discuss the fundamental challenges towards establishing a secure, privacy-preserving environment in which researchers can analyze and share data.

  • The learning objectives of this workshop are:
    • For computer scientists and statisticians:
      • Understand privacy issues related to genomic, clinical, and behavioral data that are relevant to healthcare and biomedical research
      • Understand the needs of healthcare, biomedical, and behavioral data analysts
      • Discuss current privacy technology solutions that address these issues
    • For biomedical and clinical researchers:
      • Understand the limitations of HIPAA and the need for privacy technology solutions for data disclosure
      • Discuss the compromise between preservation of patient privacy and disclosure of useful data
      • Develop best practices for data protection
